Call for Pitches: Water Injustice in the MENA region
The AMWAJ Alliance and Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Middle East are inviting journalists and writers to pitch investigative, solutions-oriented stories on water injustice across the MENA region. Themes include: agriculture, energy, waste, biodiversity, conflict, borders, militarism, and urban environments. We are looking for stories that:
→ Focus on a specific MENA case study → Highlight local voices and perspectives → Explore both challenges and solutions → Address impacts on marginalised communities How to apply: Send a 300-400 word pitch including your story idea, location, why it matters, key sources, a short bio (~100 words), and up to 3 writing samples to:amwaj@revolve.media Deadline: Monday, 12 June 2026 Open to early-career journalists, freelancers, environmental journalists, and writers with investigative or science reporting experience.
AMWAJ was pleased to take part in the XXV Annual Meeting of the Spanish Network of theAnna Lindh Foundation, held at theThree Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundationin Seville on 21–22 May 2026.Over two days, the meeting brought together members and key speakers for dialogue, exchange, creative workshops, and working sessions on the ReFAL network’s roadmap. This gathering was especially meaningful as it coincided with the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Process, with the new Pact for the Mediterranean reminding us of the lasting importance of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.

Red Monday in the Sea of Marmara: Investigation on the Impact of Sea Snot
The mucilage outbreak that caused serious damage to marine ecosystems across swathes of the Sea of Marmara in 2021 was unexpected, shocking, and discouraging for many. A seven-month investigation by journalists Alev Karakartal and Burak Altınok shows that, due to the lack of proper action over the past four years, sea snot still poses a major threat to the Sea of Marmara, as well as to the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea.
Member Updates REVOLVE: Echoes of Beirut’s Forgotten River
Journalist Hanin Haidar Ahmad joined Ahmetcan Uzlaşık, the host of the Everything is Changing podcast, to discuss her documentary "Echoes of a Forgotten River." The conversation explores the history, pollution, and possible rehabilitation of the Beirut River and what its disappearance reveals about memory, urbanisation, corruption, and hope in Lebanon’s capital.
CREAF - The FLOh!RA Competition Celebrates the Award Ceremony
On Monday, 25 May, the FLOh!RA art-science competition award ceremony took place at the UAB cinema in Barcelona. The initiative explored how plants change through art. Hosted by Dr Kate Johnson, researcher Laura Wynne Stewart, and Dr David Chaparro, the ceremony showcased 27 submissions across formats including poetry, painting, photography, video, sculpture, music, and mixed media. The jury – researcher Lucette Adet, artist Chiara Sgaramella and communications officer José Luis Ordóñez – evaluated the works based on originality, creativity, clarity, engagement with the theme, and emotional impact.
MedWaves - New Publication: Weaving a Just Transition to Circular Economy Through Territorial Cooperation
A new policy paper co-developed by MedWaves within the Interreg Euro-MED Programme Innovative Sustainable Economy Mission explores how circular economy policies can better support a fairer, more inclusive, and territorially balanced transition across the Mediterranean.
EMUNI University Participates in the International Summer School “Ports of the Future”
EMUNI University will participate in the international Summer School “Ports of the Future,” taking place from 15–19 June 2026 at Université Le Havre Normandie. As part of the programme, Dr Luka Juri, Head of the Department for Political and Social Science at EMUNI University, will deliver a lecture on 17 June titled: “From Gateway to Lake? Will Geopolitics and Climate Change Kill the Mediterranean Port?”
This documentary by AMWAJ's second media fellowHanin Haidar Ahmadfollows the Beirut River’s transformation from a lively communal waterway into an open sewer, tracing how decades of mismanagement, canalisation, and pollution reshaped its identity. Through the voices of residents and insights from experts and activists, it reveals the human and environmental cost of this decay and asks whether the river can ever return to public life.
