Reporting Climate Justice: Journalismâs Role in Driving Change
Stories have the power to drive change and journalism plays a crucial role in shaping the climate justice narrative. AMWAJ hosted the webinar Reporting Climate Justice: The Role of Journalism in Driving Change for World Water Day, highlighting the power of storytelling in shaping climate narratives. Moderated by Claudia RodrĂguez Santamarta (REVOLVE), the discussion featured Ahmed Ashour (ARIJ Network), Sofia Turati & Vittoria Torsello (Marea Media).
The Lebanese filmmaker Rebecca Tawk also participated in the webinar and presented her short film Along the Water. The short film was part of REEF Film Encounters, one of Lebanon's two environmental film festivals, which held its 6th edition, "Biodiversity and Cinema," in Kobayat in July 2024 and later in Beirut during the 19th Metropolis Lebanese Documentary Festival in January. Learn more about the Festival and Rebecca Tawk's short film Along the Water.
Water shortages in the Palestinian territories have worsened since Israelâs war on Gaza, but systemic water inequality predates the conflict. By July 2024, Israeli attacks had destroyed 88% of Gazaâs water wells and disabled three desalination units, deepening a crisis fueled by the blockade and Coastal Aquifer depletion.
Saleh El Sadi envisions a world where clean water is a right, not a privilege. In conflict-ravaged Gaza, where water scarcity is severe, he works to address this crisis. The MENA region has long struggled with water stress, worsened by climate change, poor management, conflict, and population growth. Resilience focuses on long-term recovery, while vulnerability identifies at-risk areas through mapping. Originating from ecological theory and disaster risk management, respectively, these concepts offer distinct yet complementary approaches to forest assessment and management.
