Now live: "Echoes of a Forgotten River" - Documentary by Hanin Haidar Ahmad
This documentary by Hanin Haidar Ahmad follows the Beirut River’s transformation, tracing how decades of mismanagement, canalisation, and pollution reshaped its identity. The documentary has been produced as part of the AMWAJ Media Fellowship II, supporting young journalists across the Mediterranean.
This is not just a story about a river. It is a story about justice —environmental, social and urban— and a story about recovery from crisis, conflict and erasure.
Echoes of a Forgotten River: A Documentary That Refuses to Look Away
At a time when Lebanon is defined by crisis, a new short documentary by Lebanese filmmaker Hanin Haidar Ahmad turns to something else: a forgotten river in Beirut.
"Echoes of a Forgotten River" traces the decline of the Beirut River, from a once-vibrant communal space to a symbol of pollution today. Through the memories of a longtime resident known as Zoro, alongside voices of neighbours, experts and activists, the film asks how a city loses its connection to nature and at what cost.
