Interview with Mariam Younes, Managing Director of AMWAJ & REVOLVE MENA
Based in Beirut, Mariam Younes has moved between academia, political foundations, humanitarian work and sustainability communication. With an academic background in Near and Middle Eastern Studies and two published books, she has built a career rooted in research yet driven by impact. Today, as Managing Director of AMWAJ &REVOLVE MENAand co-founder of the humanitarian NGO Karma Lebanon, she works at the intersection of environmental communication, civil society, humanitarian work, animal rights, olive production and storytelling. In this interview by Emin Yigit Koyuncuoglu, Mariam reflects on her life, impact work, academic background, environmental justice in Lebanon, animal welfare, why small changes still give her hope and many more.
CREAF - What Is the Water Framework Directive and Why Is It at Risk?
As climate change brings both prolonged droughts and severe floods, water management is once again at the centre of public debate. Concerns are growing among scientific, political, and environmental communities over potential changes to the EU’s Water Framework Directive (WFD), a cornerstone law protecting aquatic ecosystems and water quality for over 20 years. CENER21 was presented by Ema Midžić at the European Carbon Farming Summit 2026, held in Padua, Italy, from 17–19 March 2026.
Her presentation, "Beyond Carbon Sequestration: Integrating Environmental, Economic, and Social Externalities into Carbon Credit Frameworks in the Mediterranean", explored how carbon credit systems can better account for broader sustainability impacts.

Water News Europe: "French Floods Cause an Estimated € 1.2 billion in Damage"
In France, nearly 300 towns have been officially declared natural disaster zones, and many farmers have reported significant damage due to severe flooding. An official decree recognising the natural disaster status, due to be published this month, will open the doors to compensation under the Natural Disaster Compensation Scheme. The damages were estimated at € 1.2 billion.
