In 2025, the AMWAJ Alliance launched the first edition of its media fellowship, designed to support early-career journalists from Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries in covering sustainability-related stories. Basma El Atti was selected as the inaugural AMWAJ Fellow, undertaking a four-month programme that included a monthly stipend, close mentorship from the AMWAJ team, and publication opportunities through AMWAJ and REVOLVE.
The outcome of her four-month fellowship was her story, The Rainmakers of Morocco, which explores the meaning and significance of rain in communities deeply connected to the land. In Morocco, rain is never just rain; it is a divine mood made manifest — a conversation between the heavens and the people.
"Rain is not just weather for us. It is baraka (a blessing). It comes when the earth is ready and the people are humble," says Aicha, an elder from a valley near Ouarzazate. Indeed, the Amazigh New Year begins with the agricultural calendar. Here, rain is more than just water from the sky: it is a sign and a covenant.
